Elton John at Chichen Itza | Yucatan Holidays Packages
We will soon have the most important event of the year at Chichen Itza (sounds like “chicken pizza”). Sir Elton John, the English singer-songwriter, composer, and pianist, will perform on stage in front of the spectacular Kukulkan Pyramid, Saturday, April 3rd, 2010. The show promises to be an amazing experience at one of the most visited and renowned attractions in Mexico.

Chichen Itza International Airport
Few people know it, but besides the Cancun and Merida international airports, there is another “doorway” to the Mayan world. This one is much more closer, actually. Just 17 kilometers from the renowned archaeological site by the same name, Chichen Itza International Airport is located in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula. With a 2.8-kilometer long and 45-meter wide runway, it has a control tower, plus a rescue and fire-control center. Besides this, the airport is equipped with up-to-date facilities and is able to receive any type of aircraft.
Although it was closed in 2000 due to inactivity, the airport was opened again providing all services and new installations for the superb concert of the tenor, Placido Domingo, on 2008. Some political, economical, and medical (the H1N1 hysteria) issues have unfortunately affected this hidden, yet well-located airfield. Presently, it’s only receiving some local charter flights from Cancun, Cozumel, and Merida, but it is expected to start functioning on an international basis soon. Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and the USA are some of the countries that may have direct flight connections to this region with one of the most visited tourist attractions in Mexico.

Sarah Brightman: An unforgettable night in Chichen Itza.
At 9:05 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2009, under the brilliantly illuminated pyramid of “El Castillo” at Chichen Itza, the British soprano, Sarah Brightman, appeared before nearly 6,000 people that awaited her show in silent anticipation. For almost three hours, the singer performed 25 songs and wore 13 different dresses.
Since Chichen Itza was the last venue on her Mexican tour (after Ciudad Juarez, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puebla, and Mexico City), Sarah offered an outstanding performance for attendees from all across Mexico and the world (from 12 different countries). After the first song, Gothica, the soprano welcomed the audience and exclaimed in clear and perfect Spanish how excited she was to perform at one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Her continuing performance of all-time hits amazed the audience. Always glamorous and astonishingly beautiful, Sarah used her enchanting voice in songs like: The Phantom of the Opera, Dust in the Wind, What a Wonderful World, Who Wants to Live Forever, Canto della Terra, Hijo de Luna, among many others. Surrounded by the Symphonic Orchestra of Yucatan and her musicians, the British celebrity also shared the stage with the countertenors Fernando Lima and Erkan Aki.
The authorities of Yucatan declared in a press conference that two of the most important British celebrities of all time have scheduled shows in Chichen Itza for the coming years. Elton John will perform at the archaeological site next year, and Paul McCartney, the ex-Beatle, is expected to give a concert too by 2011.
“El Castillo”, the symbol of Chichen Itza, majestically illuminated for the event.
Always beautiful, the British soprano delighted all the attendees with her unparalleled voice.
Travel Photography: For your next Yucatan Holiday
Whether or not you have a professional camera, it’s important to take care of some details if you expect to return from your trip with a bunch of interesting or even fascinating pictures. Some basic but essential items are lens cleaner, batteries, and a tripod, but more importantly, we’ll give you some advice about how to take a great travel photo (probably not a National Geographic one, but a picture you’ll like to share)! Here are just a few ideas for taking pictures overseas.
What to photograph
This is entirely your decision. You are probably the type of person who enjoys taking pictures of people, trying to capture their culture and traditions. Remember, in this case, always be respectful when you ask your “models” to get ready. If you are planning to take a portrait without asking, try to be discrete, or they may be offended.
Around the Yucatan Peninsula and the Riviera Maya, there are hundreds of perfect landscapes to capture by photograph. Whether it is a shot of one of the amazing beaches along the Riviera Maya, a nature-surrounded cenote, or one of the breathtaking Mayan archaeological sites, the region is ideal for professional and amateur photographers.
If you are an animal lover, you should consider visiting one of the eco parks or nature reserves in the Yucatan Peninsula. Tres Ríos, Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Celestún or Ría Lagartos are definitely the best places to take some awesome animals pictures!
What to consider
Once you have decided what to photograph, you’ll have to consider some aspects to include in your picture to make it really special. Action for example is the key to a great photo. “Capturing action in your photographs adds atmosphere that an otherwise straight-on shot cannot,” says Lola Akinmade, travel photography expert. It’s common to see boring or lifeless pictures from trips. Try to experiment. Look for a nice landscape, and add a special touch of action. You won’t regret it.
Other “musts” in photography (not only while traveling) are composition and balance. Composition is the visual process of organizing the elements of a scene into a balanced and pleasing arrangement. And balance is considered a compositional rule for finding symmetry between the interesting points of a picture. Although composition is largely a matter of personal taste, applying the “rule of thirds” may be pretty helpful for your masterpiece. (Draw imaginary lines through your picture, separating it into 3 rows and 3 columns, and the important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.)
Take advantage of these other ways to take a great photo! Framing is using an object (branches, windows, tunnels, etc.) to act as a frame for your subject or your point of interest, so it directs the viewer’s attention directly to what you want to show. This is great way to get superb pictures. You can play with the color too: take black & white (AKA Monochrome) photos to give a “classic” touch or to evoke a feeling. Consider telling a story or using vivid colors too.
Some Additional tips:
-
· Always bring enough (meaning extra) batteries and film!
- · If you’re using a reflex camera, bring all the cleaning and maintenance stuff; usually, digital cameras require less attention.
- · Try to learn some basic words in the language of the place you’re visiting. This can be very helpful.
- · If you are taking night shots, use a tripod.
- · For most pictures, the best is in the natural light of the morning and evening.
- · Consider using 2 or 3 memory cards, instead of one with high capacity; this is to prevent losing all your pictures if something happens with that big card.
- · Let yourself go and experiment with your camera. You’ll probably be surprised in a good way.
How about an amazing shot of an iguana posing over a pyramid in Tulum, or perhaps a group of Mayan women knitting huipiles? The options are endless in this paradise! Sarah Brightman in Chichen Itza!
She’ll be performing for 5,000 guests on October 31st.
The world renowned British soprano singer, Sarah Brightman, is returning to Mexico to perform in a series of concerts across the country in the month of October. She begins in Ciudad Juarez on October 2nd to give a great finale to the Festival Internacional Chihuahua. Following this event, she performs at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City on October 5th, which promises to be a great night at one of the most important musical venues on the continent. Her next stop is the Auditorio Siglo XXI in Puebla on October 7th. After this, Sarah will sing for at least 10,000 people on October 9th in the Auditorio Telmex in Guadalajara. On October 11th, she performs in Monterrey at the Arena Monterrey.
At the end of her tour on October 31st, Sarah Brightman lends her outstanding voice to a concert at the only archaeological site in Mexico named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World: the ancient Mayan site of Chichen Itza. Thousands of lucky attendees will witness an amazing musical spectacle, known as the Concierto de la Piramide (The Concert of the Pyramid).
Brightman follows Placido Domingo (who performed a sold-out concert at Chichen Itza last fall) and Luciano Pavarotti (who sang in 1997) as history-makers for performing at such an incredible cultural place. Despite the concern of some experts about security at Chichen Itza, organizers have already announced that next year, Elton John will most likely visit this millennial spot to perform in concert.
